Birthday gifts

13 Nov

Just a quick one as I am tired and short of time!

Bethan celebrated her 7th birthday this week, you might have seen on my facebook page a photo of a work in progress cushion cover, well it got finished in plenty of time for her birthday:

She was delighted with it and has it in her bed to rest on while she reads by torchlight at bedtime.

Her clever papa made her birthday card from some scraps from this project:

For the first time Bethan had written a list of things she would like for presents, this included a violin and recorder. She has never had any music lessons but seems influenced by other children at school. Funnily enough we weren’t about to buy her a violin but a ‘kind’ uncle sent her a recorder. So knowing this was on the way I very quickly made a case for it.

The fabric is an Alexander Henry print which I got in a swap at Make, Do and Mend from Jo (Saints and Pinners). I chose it for this project thinking that somehow it might help the tune coming out of the instrument.  So far it’s not been too painful and she tends to play it in her room up on her bunk bed so that a certain small child doesn’t snatch it out of her mouth to have a go himself!

It is just two pieces of fabric sewn with a french seam, the top hemmed and then turned in and then poppers applied to keep the case shut.  Top tip here:  poppers really work, it means that the aforementioned little boy can’t open the case and play it while she is at school, in fact I don’t think the little sister can open it either!

That’s all for now, all the other stuff will have to wait for another time although I should say that if you want to take advantage of £8 for a bundle of 10 vintage sheet FQ’s as mentioned in my last post let me know by Wednesday.  I’ve already made up a few bundles for some of you but have plenty of sheeting left!
