My Sewing Sanctuary

22 Sep

I can’t quite believe that this is the last month of the And Sew On BOM but it is and Kristy kindly left what I think was the fiddliest block until last!

It took a while for me to find the energy and headspace to tackle this one.  I printed the pattern out at the beginning of the month and left the pages and pages of it on the side hoping that maybe the sewing elves would visit and sort it out for me one night.

Reality struck last week and I pulled fabrics for each section, making notes as I went as to what fabric I would use where.

Mostly this technique plays off but I had a couple of mishaps along the way.  The part where the quilt being stitched flows over the table for some reason only ended up with one piece as quilt and the rest wall.  It wasn’t until I was stitching it together that I realised so out came my trusty seam ripper.

If you take a close look at the basket of scraps you might see that mine is full to the brim, the sections on the far right and left should be wall so that the scraps looked more piled up , I didn’t realise that until it was too late and I decided that as my scraps are overflowing maybe this was a more accurate portrayal – that’s my story and I’m sticking to it.

My favourite bit of this block is the quilt.  The pattern doesn’t call for paper piecing all those bits but when I was pulling scraps for the block I found a few off cuts from a quilt that I made earlier this year and I thought they would work well for the fabric.

Some of the block is quite an accurate portrayal of my sewing space; wooden floor, table with yellow formica top and wooden legs, and that window, I have one of those and all I see through it is sky and clouds (and yes rain fairly often!).  You can see my real sewing space here, or rather that is what it looked like until this weekend when we moved things around, trying to make best use of space and a comfortable cutting table.

Thanks very much to Kristy for a brilliant BOM now I need to make sure that I don’t leave the block in a pile for eternity.

  1. This is so wonderful. I love all of it, the funky wallpaper, the pictures, the quilt, the bue chair……it’s all brilliant.

  2. It is a brilliant block, and I love your window and frames!!
I’m a couple of months behind, so if you can send me some energy I’d be really grateful!!!

  3. I so love your wallpaper fabric… I wouldn’t be brave enough to try it but it really makes your block shine! I need to go back and do the last 3 but it really feels great to have this tough one done.
