Getting ahead of myself

26 Jan

It’s definitely still January but I’ve already got February’s bee blocks made!

I blame Maria for posting what she wanted in our flickr group. I immediately started thinking about it.  Maria requested 10.5 unfinished blocks, she’s planning to make a sampler quilt so we could choose our block, yes a completely free choice! Fortunately Maria specified colours of grey, brown, cream, navy, green, orange, teal and yellow, nothing floral or ‘girly’.

So I had a quick search around for 10.5″ tutorials to avoid spending time on quilt maths.  The first one I came across was Charlotte’s measurements for a 10.5″ x and + quilt block using Amy’s tutorial:

It’s a block I’ve had pinned for ages, I’d love to make a quilt using this block, this will have to do for now.

The other block I chose to make is a simple star:

Tutorial by Alison of Cluck, Cluck, Sew.  It makes a 11″ block which can be easily trimmed down to 10.5″.  It’s not often I use brown fabrics so it was fun to rummage through my brown scraps to see what I had.  All the fabrics used in these blocks came from my scrap boxes, I’m not sure I’ll ever be able to bust my stash!

Inevitably there are leftovers when making blocks, rather than consigning them to the scraps boxes or even the bin I stitched the HST’s together.

The little ones are just 1.5″ square.  I’m thinking that maybe I’ll start a new project of a scrap quilt with all the leftovers, although I guess it might take a few years to make it big enough!

  1. I keep all of my ‘scrap’ HSTs too although I doubt I’ll ever have enough for a full quilt!
