Way back in February I finished a scrappy log cabin quilt and started blocks for another one or two!
Over the months I’ve added to the blocks and they appeared on my 2nd quarter FAL list and my 3rd quarter FAL list!
I’m delighted to say that this quarter I have finished one of the quilts:
It’s made up of a combination of 9″ blocks and groups of four 4.75″ blocks stitched together to make 9″ blocks.
All the blocks were made entirely from the contents of my scrap boxes. There was very little planning involved, I went through each box (mine are organised by colour) and pulled out all the long pieces.
I discovered that most of my scraps were less than 10″ long which I why I decided on 9″ unfinished blocks. Some of the fabrics in the 4.75″ blocks were 1″ wide, pretty tiny but big enough to work in these. There are pieces of flannel and cord in there too, nice for a bit of different texture.
I must admit I was unsure whether or not this totally random approach would work and whether it would just turn out to look pretty awful; but I’m pleased with it.
I quilted in the ditch using Aurifil 2130 on top and 2026 in the bobbin (both 50 weight threads). I wanted to use just one fabric for the binding to try and pull the quilt together after all the scrappiness it contains.
I’d love to know how many different prints are in this quilt, there are a number of repeats but I’m guessing there are still at least a 100 different ones in there! Anyone fancy counting them for me?
