Sewing for a girl or boy

8 Aug

I asked my sister in law what my niece might like for her 5th birthday and the response was pyjamas.  Of course I wasn’t about to go shopping for pyjama’s when I can make them so I went shopping for fabric instead and found some gorgeous Robert Kaufman Cozy Cotton.

I used the Goodnight Sweetheart Pyjama pattern from Sewing for Boys, I’ve used this pattern at least 3 times before for boys and girls and I had the right size traced out too.

Not having a child the right size to model these for me these are the best we get:

IMG_8914 (2)I had a contrasting yellow fabric (Kona Canary) that was just right for the piping, the girls chose the buttons from my yellow button jar; nice big ones for small hands. IMG_8923

There is something quite enjoyable about the familiar, although it was fairly irritating to run out of thread halfway through the project and having to wait until the next day to stock up and continue.

IMG_8921I think the trousers are my favourites, they have a double cuff which means that as the child grows taller they can be taken down. IMG_8919

My fabric choice was slightly based on the fact that I thought it was gender neutral so that these can be passed down to the little brother in time.

This was on my 3rd quarter FAL list so I’m happy to have this ticked off and posted off to the birthday girl.

  1. These are so cute! I love the big buttons and the yellow piping just makes it all come together. And I absolutely think these work great for a boy or a girl.
