A whole new outfit and how to use knit scraps

9 Aug

I’m still playing a bit of catch up on things made but not shared.  Back in June Bethan asked if I could make her a skirt, we had a rummage in my stash to see what cuts of fabric we had that would be large enough (the majority of my stash is fat quarters).  Bethan chose the metre cut of ships from Sarah Jane Studios Out to Sea line:

Using ‘a simple skirt tutorial’ by Dana I cut a piece 36″ wide by 19.5″ tall, overlocked the end together, made a waistband casing and hemmed the bottom.  It took less than an hour to make and she’s worn it lots already (you can guess that by the creased look).

IMG_8479What we did discover when I made it was that she didn’t have top to wear with it  so another rummage through the knit fabrics and we found a red jersey that would be fine for a t-shirt.  I used this free t-shirt pattern by Scattered Thoughts of a Crafty Mom, I made the largest size (age 10) and it fits Bethan fine.  It was a bit plain looking so I used the scraps to make a flower to add a little something, there’s a great tutorial here, I stitched rather than mess with glue and it worked wonderfully.  I made sure that the flower wasn’t too big to weigh the t-shirt down. So if you need a use for jersey scraps this is one idea, if you have any others please let me know because unlike quilting cotton I struggle to know what to do with these. IMG_8477

I’m linking up a vaguely scrappy post:

  1. That’s such a lovely outfit, I hope you’re having enough good weather to wear it!
And I would also like tips and ideas for knit fabrics, I have quite a bit that’s looking for a good repurpose…

  2. Fabulous outfit! Some people use cotton scraps whe making underwear- your idea is prettier though! Thank you for joining up with #scraptastictuesday!
