A soft and spiky quilt

5 Jul

I can’t remember what other quilts I have made this year but I think this is my favourite:

It’s for Bethan; she chose the fabrics and planned out each block and left me to do the sewing.

Hedgehog

She picked enough for 23 hedgehogs:

Hazel Hedgehogs so far...

and once they were all made we pulled for 2 more after looking at the mix of colours and prints.

WIP Wednesday

I think that she’s pretty happy with how it’s turned out.

Can you see the hedgehog spikes there have hedgehogs on them?

I used lots of low volume prints from my stash, and discovered that 2 or 3 charm squares were actually enough for the background of each one.

It wasn’t until I’d made the blocks that I realised that I hadn’t really got a plan for the sashing and did not have enough of the prints to continue with them.  Fortunately I have been building my low volume stash with 2 metre cuts and so was able to offer Bethan these, she chose the Stella Dot by Dear Stella.  I’m really pleased that the background and sashing blend well together (aside from the grey Comma!).

I quilted this lightly in straight lines which ran approximately 1/2″ from all sides of each block.

I’m generally a bit slack at labelling quilts that are going to stay here but as this one is for Bethan I did make an effort!

There may have been another small child saying ‘I want it’ but I’m pretty sure I don’t want to make another quilt full of hedgehogs just yet!  I’ve moved on from the ‘issues’ I had with it a week or so ago but if you want to read about them they are here, and thanks to everyone who left kind, encouraging comments.

  1. Now there’s a great idea to get a quilt, pick out the fabrics you really want, then leave it to the staff to put together for you 😉 It looks fab, but I can understand why you might not want to make it a twin!

  2. Such a fun quilt – the hedgehogs are so cute and colourful!

  3. I love this quilt! In fact I’ve looked at most of the EH animal head designs and thought I want to make a quilt of them. But I’ve soon reconsidered as it does look like a lot of fiddly cutting and piecing!
