I’ve never seen Star Wars

19 Oct

So this is what happens when your middle child gets invited to a friends birthday party and they are a Star Wars fan.

I immediately thought of making something but what? I know there is a line of Star Wars fabric out there but none in my stash and I wasn’t about to start shopping for fabric I’m unlikely to use again.  Then I remembered that the awesome Kristy of Quiet Play has designed a number of paper pieced Star Wars themed blocks.  So I checked out her Craftsy store (no longer available) and browsed the patterns, I discussed with Leah what she thought he might like and we agreed on the X Wing.

The paper piecing was pretty simple compared to blocks I’ve made in the past, it came together in approx an hour:

I added borders and then quilted with Aurifil 1158 40 weight.

My usual zip cover on the back:

I remembered to add a label:

Binding was the same fabric as the backing, I cut it at 2″ wide so that once stitched in the same way as binding a quilt it ends up quite thin and a little like piping.

I’m pleased to say that this is the first finish from my 4th quarter FAL list and yes the truth is I’ve never seen Star Wars and I’m really hoping that the birthday boy is still a big fan!

  1. Brilliant idea! It’s not often necessary to buy specific theme fabrics as you demonstrate; good thinking!!

  2. It’s beautiful and I am sure that it was appreciated. I am not sure how you missed Star Wars, I have been watching them all my life and am keen to get to the newest one. Thank you for participating in the FAL, on behalf of the 2016 global FAL hosts.
