Back in March Leah asked me if I would make her a shirt like the one I made for her brother last summer:
Leah loves a proper shirt and I’d checked out the pattern, the largest size is for a 6 yr old, Leah is almost 8 but smaller than most of her classmates and the chest measurements on the size chart were similar to hers. It’s her birthday next month so I made this my goal for May’s ALYoF as I had done nothing except ask Leah to choose fabric from stash:
You might remember me making the Western Shirt last year and it being a nightmare, it was because there was an error in the pattern. It’s has been corrected now, the corrections is on the Storey website. However I found this shirt even trickier than the first! I don’t understand why but I don’t think I will use this pattern again. I’ve since realised that I have a similar child’s shirt pattern in my Liberty Love book – so I’ll be investigating that.
In theory it should be possible to make all the patterns in the Little One Yard Wonders book from a yard, for the size 6 shirt it states that you need 60″ wide fabric which I think is sort of cheating. But we had already decided to use a different fabric for the pockets and I managed to get all the pattern pieces out of 1 yard of 44″ wide fabric:
This doesn’t quite show you how, but this was the basic layout with a bit of manoeuvring of fabric after cutting the main pieces.
I used some lovely blue snaps/poppers that I bought in a job lot from the car boot sale last year:
Anyway the size is great on Leah and she is delighted with it:
I think she has worn almost every day since I finished it last week! Yes, I will have to prise it off her to be washed:
This was on my 2nd quarter FAL list so another tick off that, I’ll be linking this post up at the end of June.
