Two different spellings but ultimately exactly the same thing:
selvage or selvedge
[sel-vij]
noun
1. the edge of woven fabric finished so as to prevent raveling, often in a narrow tape effect, different from the body of the fabric.
2. any similar strip or part of surplus material, as at the side of wallpaper.
I have a collection of these; a bit like scraps they shouldn’t (in my opinion) be thrown away.
It might not look like much but I’ve just put it on the kitchen scales and it’s actually over 2.5kg of selvedges! Definitely a motivator to make some things with them!
Do you have a stash of selvedges? Jess at Quilty Habit and Renee at Quilts of a Feather are having a ‘Selvage Along’ check out their blogs for the schedule and to be inspired to sew with your selvedges.
I love selvedges but it takes ages to build a decent collection!!
Wow that sounds like a lot! I should weigh mine too, haha. Glad you’re joining the Selvage Along!
I’ve just discovered Jessica’s linky party – perfect timing for my denim & selvedge bag that I finished today! Jxo
I donate all mine to Willowbeck Di 😉 It is tempting to keep them!
