Vintage fabric finds – March

Here’s a selection of the vintage sheets I’ve acquired this month:

Vintage sheets - March

I say ‘acquired’ because a some of them were gifted to me by lovely ladies at the Sewing Directory meet up in Exeter.  The lovely Helen from Indianna Dreams gave me the gorgeous yellow floral print at the top right, some of the others came from a generous blog reader and local lady Sue – thanks very much ladies.

I have found a few pieces in the charity shop recently and they are making their way into vintage sheet charm packs in my etsy shop (in which I had my best ever month for sales in March – woo hoo!).

Yesterday all my troubles seemed so far away

*Big sigh* it’s been a tough week, it’s been very cold, the children have been on holiday from school and there have been builders working on the house.  By Friday I was pretty shattered but I had Saturday to look forward to and EmilySusy and I were off to the Spring Quilt Festival.  We had a wonderful time, we bought fabric, we didn’t fight over any but did make promises to split some bargain pieces, we talked, we laughed, we critiqued the quilts on show and generally had fun.  We didn’t get kicked out of the show but we were there right until the end when we met up with Katy and went out for dinner, Jo joined us too she’d be out to the show in the morning.  It was a real treat to get out without the children and forget about the mess back at home – thanks ladies.

And just because no post seems complete without a photo, here is some lovely fabric that arrived here last week (sadly with a customs charge):

AMH Voile

which made this seem a bit more bearable:

If I can summon up the energy I’ll have a couple of posts about finished quilts this week – hope you have a good week.

Vintage sheets – January/February

It’s been a quiet few months on the finding front.  A sheet from the car boot:

Vintage sheet - blue/yellow floral

A handmade duvet cover from the charity shop, this was quite expensive, especially considering the one side was plain, but still I had to have it:

Vintage sheet - teal floral

A couple of pillowcases in a fairly rare dark blue print:

A gorgeous pile of pillowcases in this print:

Vintage sheet - pink purple

Fortunately I also had the UK and Ireland Vintage sheet swap going on.  I think in the end we had 11 swappees and 200 or so FQ’s!  I was so intent on sorting and attempting to meet requests for particular colours that I neglected to take any photographs.

Here’s a photo of the bundle that Judith received back that gives you a taste of the gorgeous prints and colours we had:

Judith was also incredibly quick off the mark and made up a block:

Brit Bee Block Feb13

She then sent off some fabrics to her Brit Bee ladies who have made up blocks for her, so you may see them popping up on other blogs too!

Jan found that the arrival of the fat quarters helped her find her sewing mojo and quickly sewed up a quilt top:

And I’ve been sewing with mine too:

Fabric stashing

I’ve done a little bit of fabric buying over the last couple of months, nothing excessive (at least I didn’t think so until I got half way through this post) and only in the sales (sort of).

On Black Friday I preordered Architexture from Stash Modern Fabrics at a discounted price:

Architexture FQ bundle

I’ve spent a fair amount of time in the last 12 months looking at architectural drawings and this appealed as soon as I saw it at the end of the summer.

And I filled the envelope with a yard of each of these, in a vague attempt to add to my small purple stash:

Stash fabrics from 'Stash Modern Fabrics'

(L-R Flea Market Fancy Fabric – Denyse Schmidt – Seedpod Stripe in Pink, Guising Halloween Fabric – Lizzy House – Jewels in Chocolate, Chelsea Collection – Windham Fabrics – Round in Purple, it is more purple than this looks!)

I won a $50 credit in the Scrappy Stash QAL at Ellison Lane Quilts to spend at Fabricworm, I didn’t spend it straight away and just before Christmas ordered a bright FQ bundle of Pearl Bracelets:

Pearl Bracelets

and a FQ bundle of Type by Julia Rothman, it didn’t include the clip board print but I’m not so keen on that so didn’t mind:

and filled up the envelope/spent the last dollars on a yard of sale fabric ready for next Christmas!

Christmas Time - Alexander Henry

Next, a bundle of solids and a little bit of Flea Market Fancy from the Fat Quarter Shop in one of their 12 days of Christmas offers.  The solids were $3.50 per yard so it seemed silly not to add to my small solids collection:

Also from the FQS was a  half price FQ bundle of Super Star by Zoe Pearn for My Minds Eye, Riley Blake.  I don’t often buy fabric with a specific project in mind but this one is going to become a quilt for the Siblings Together project, I also bought extra half price yardage for backing and binding.  I’m thinking that this would be great for a teenage boy.  No idea about a pattern yet and still wondering if I can get 2 quilts out of it…

Superstar fabrics

Then the evils of twitter…a friend tweeted one evening how she was waiting to collect a parcel from the local Post Office depot, she then posted a picture of what was in the parcel, I had to follow the link and discovered that Doughty’s were selling Michele D’Amores Wordplay for the small sum of £3.99 per metre!  So I soon discovered that I’d ordered a metre of most prints left:

Wordplay by Michele D'Amore

The text fabrics are great but I’m also loving the dots/diamonds and think they’ll be wonderful for quilt binding.

A week later after following Doughty’s on twitter discovered that some prints that were previously out of stock were back in and again a metre of each arrived on my doorstep:

I have already used some of these, hoping to show you how soon.

Doughty’s offer a brilliant service and the postage was better than reasonable – highly recommended especially with the hike in shipping fees from the US.  They currently have a range of Amy Butler fabrics for £5.65 per metre, from the Midwest Modern, Daisy Chain and Love ranges and even a few pieces from the Belle and Lotus ranges.  Worth a look even if just for quilt backing.

So the lesson I have learnt today is keep quiet about fabric purchases or write about them as they arrive so that I don’t write a post which makes me look like I have an addiction!

Scrap swap

A week or so ago I had a message from Ashleigh who blogs at Ickle Tomato Handmade asking if I would be interested in a scrap swap.  Someone else’s scraps are always interesting so I had a sort out and sent her an envelope weighing just over 400g stuffed with this lot:

Scrap swap

And this is what I got in the post a few days later:

I asked for any purples and oranges as my scrap boxes are low on those, I forgot about yellow but happily there were quite a few in there and I could do with some of those too:

The pieces I sent Ashleigh were generally bigger than mine but she said that anything more than 2.5″ square would be fine for the project she has in mind.  I’m just hoping she’s happy with her parcel!

Fabric mail

I’ve been remiss in keeping you up to date with additions to my fabric stash. Just before Christmas I had an email from Valori Wells telling me that my name had been picked as a commenter on her blog to receive a fat quarter bundle of Cocoon or Novella, a tough choice but one I had to make.  I went for Novella as I especially love the zig zag prints and the colours are superb.

So this turned up in the mail sometime in January:

FQ bundle of Novella

Mmm lovely fabric

This teal print is one of my favourites, the colour is delicious:

Love these prints

There is even a brown in there too which looks stunning:

Novella by Valori Wells

Then just after Christmas I won a giveaway over at Patchwork Delights, sponsored by Fililis a new online fabric shop based in Ireland, run by Patricia and her mum.  They very kindly sent me a FQ bundle of Cuzco by Kate Spain.  It is simply delicious, not fabric I would normally be drawn to but now I have it in my hands I’m finding it is quite delightful!

And as you might guess I have no idea what I might use either of these bundles for, but for now I’m quite happy just looking at them!

Thanks very much Valori and Fililis for these gorgeous additions to my stash.

Vintage finds – December

I’m a little later than usual with my round-up of vintage finds for the month.

I’ve not been to the car boot sale for ages; illness, birthdays, exhaustion and Christmas have prevented me for getting out of bed and out of the house, so there was only one find in December:

Vintage sheet - floral

This was once a vintage sheet but had been cut and hemmed and used I’m guessing as a tablecloth, my husband found them in the fabric bin in the charity shop, 3 pieces in all. One piece was labelled and it confirmed that it was once a twin flat sheet made in the USA.

This print here is a pillowcase found only last week but I’m using it to fill out this blog post!

Vintage pillowcase - orange/yellow floral

What I can also show you though is this:

Vintage Sheet FQ's for swap

A pile of gorgeous vintage sheet fat quarters sent by Veronica from the USA for the vintage sheet swap that I’m organising.  The cut off date for FQ’s to arrive with me is this Friday 18th January.  So if you want to join in you’d better be quick, there is a fantastic selection of vintage sheet FQ’s stashed in a box under the bed that have been sent in to me and are ready to be swapped and sent back out.   The flickr group is here if you want to join in or just spy on the wonderful selection of sheets that are being swapped.

Lastly here is the latest item to be made from vintage sheets and added to my etsy shop:

Heart fabric tape - just right for your valentine

Yes, all ready for Valentines day, vintage valentines fabric tape, unique and handmade with love by me!

A commission – quick gifts

A good friend recently (last week) commissioned me to make little gifts that she could give to her work colleagues this Christmas. Last year I made keyrings with their initials on, which she tells me they all loved and still use:

Personalised key ring - K

So I had a think and suggested tissue pack covers, useful all year round and they look great too:

Tissue pack covers

How appropriate that now my little boy and I have stinking colds!  I was trusted to make the fabric choices so had fun rifling through my stash (yes it does need a tidy).

There are a number of tutorials out there to make these (here and here) I’ve made up my own to fit the packets I use and to enclose raw edges too.

(fabrics: Fall – Summersville by Lu Summers, Sugar and Spice by Quilted Fish, Hedgehog Heaven by Michael Miller, Weekends by Erin McMorris, Charm and Belle by Amy Butler)

You don’t need much fabric for these, you could get 2 covers from a fat quarter.  The print that you see at the opening to the cover is the lining fabric.  You could use the same fabric inside and out but I like the ‘pop’ of something different peeping out.

Why not make a few to stuff in stockings ready for those winter colds?

Birthday gifts and a giveaway winner

The end of another week and another amazing Sew, Mama, Sew giveaway day.  Thank you to all those who visited, for your lovely birthday wishes and welcome to all the new subscribers.

Before I announce the giveaway winner I thought I’d share photo’s of some of my birthday goodies:

Gorgeous brooches from my girls

My gorgeous daughters bought these for me, made by a very talented lady, Lucky Lulu.  We are lucky enough to have her living local to us and she had a stall at the Craft Jam at Exeter Castle last weekend and the girls sneaked off and spent their savings.

I had been wanting some ‘tape measure’ fabric for a while, Tobit even searched for some on his trip to San Francisco last year, the other day an email landed in my junk folder and as I was just about to delete it and something caught my eye ‘fabric on sale’.  So I headed over to the Fabric Guild and found some great fabrics for only £4.95 a yard, which in the UK is a bit of a bargain (and they had some not so nice stuff for even less).  I duly sent the link to my husband and low and behold on my birthday I received this:

Tape Measure fabric

A yard of each colour from the American Jane Recess range.  Fabric shoppers be aware the postage charge is calculated as you put stuff in the basket.  This lot was quoted at £5 to post which funnily enough Tobit thought was quite a lot.  Later in the week he discovered that they had only charged him £2.70.  I’d say they are missing a trick, I, for one am put off by expensive postage.

Oh yes and the chocolate cake was delicious and has all disappeared somewhere!

So without further ado I’ve put the numbers in and the winner of the vintage sheet charms is…

who is:

Congratulations Rachael, I’ve sent you an email and will get this off to you as soon as I have your address.

And remember if you didn’t win there is still a chance to get a 15% discount in my shop using the code SMS1212 until tomorrow 9 December 2012 at 9pm (UK time).

Vintage finds – November

The Sew Mama Sew Giveaway post is here, there is still plenty of time to enter.

It’s been a busy month and I think I only made it to the car boot once, due to terrible weather (I can’t imagine anyone was out on those Sundays, buyers or sellers), illness and being away at the wedding.

So technically only the first two sheets were found in November:

Vintage Sheet finds - November

The wonderful blue one was gifted to me on Saturday at the fair by some lovely friends Ant and Tatty, it was pulled from a bag of stuff at Tatty’s mums that was due to go the charity shop.  I am delighted with it!

The others are all pillowcases that I found at the charity shop on my birthday yesterday!  I’ll be chopping these up to add to charm packs available in my shop (use the discount code in yesterdays post for 15% off).
